2 Washington hospitals have the top 5-star patient rating: Tri-State Memorial Hospital (Clarkston), Spokane VA Medical Center (Spokane).
Washington ranks #33 of 50 states on the CMS patient survey. Its 60 rated hospitals average 3.23 patient stars, against a U.S. average of 3.27. 38% are rated 4 or 5 stars and 18% are rated 1 or 2 stars. 71% of surveyed patients said they would definitely recommend their hospital, compared with 71% nationally.
Island Hospital in Anacortes has the highest share of patients who would definitely recommend it: 83% (based on 329 completed surveys). Next are Madigan AMC (Ft Lewis) (82%) and Swedish Issaquah (81%).
Only hospitals with a CMS patient star rating are listed. CMS gives one only to hospitals with at least 100 completed surveys over the reporting period, so many small rural, critical access and specialty hospitals have none, and some hospitals are not required to take part in the survey. A missing patient rating is not a bad rating. Every hospital still has its own page in the Washington hospital directory.

Source: CMS HCAHPS patient survey (Care Compare, Patient survey - Hospital), patients discharged from October 2024 to September 2025. CMS gives a patient star rating only to hospitals with at least 100 completed surveys, and adjusts results for patient mix and survey mode. Each facility is counted once by its CMS Certification Number. Updated automatically when CMS publishes new data.
Patient ratings describe patients' experience of their stay, not clinical outcomes; see the CMS overall quality ratings and hospital safety results too. About the data. Not affiliated with CMS. For a medical emergency, call 911.
