Questions
What does Birthing-Friendly mean?
It is a CMS designation for hospitals that have attested to taking part in a maternity care quality improvement program and to implementing recommended patient safety practices. It reflects taking part in those programs, not a measured birth outcome.
Do other hospitals deliver babies?
Yes. Many hospitals without the designation run labor and delivery units, so they don't appear on this list. Call a hospital to confirm it offers labor and delivery before you plan to give birth there.
What if I'm in labor or there's an emergency?
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Federal law (EMTALA) requires hospital emergency rooms to screen and stabilize anyone who comes in, including a woman in labor.
