The short version. You can use this site without an account and without telling us who you are. We show ads through Google AdSense and measure traffic with Google Analytics, and those services use cookies. We only get your email address if you contact us or sign up for hospital alerts, and we never sell it. This site does not ask for, and does not want, your personal health information.
Who we are
HospitalsInEachState.com (“the site,” “we,” “us”) is a free directory of U.S. hospitals built from public federal data. This policy covers HospitalsInEachState.com only. Other websites we link to have their own policies.
Information you give us
- Contact, correction and listing forms. Your name, email address, the message you write, and the page or hospital the message is about. We use this to reply to you and to fix the data.
- Hospital alerts. If you choose to follow a hospital, we store your email address, the hospital you follow and the dates you confirmed or unsubscribed. Alerts are double opt-in: nothing is sent until you click the link in the confirmation email, and every alert includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
- Job alerts and job listings. Job search and job alert widgets on some pages are provided by ZipRecruiter. Anything you enter into those widgets goes directly to ZipRecruiter and is covered by ZipRecruiter’s privacy policy, not ours.
Please don’t send us medical information. We are a directory, not a health care provider, and we cannot help with your medical care. Don’t include diagnoses, treatment details or other health information about yourself or anyone else in a message.
Information collected automatically
- Standard request data. Like any website, our servers and our hosting and security providers receive your IP address, browser type, device type, the page you asked for and the page that referred you. We use this to run, secure and troubleshoot the site.
- Abuse prevention. When you submit a form, we store a one-way hash of your IP address (not the address itself) and your browser’s user agent, so we can limit spam and repeated sign-ups.
- Searches. Addresses, cities or ZIP codes you type into the hospital search are used to find nearby hospitals and may appear in our server logs.
- Your location. The map page can ask your browser for your location to suggest nearby results; that location stays in your browser. On the “hospitals near me”, ER and cost estimator pages, if you tap “Use my location” your browser shares your location, which we round to about half a mile and send to our server to sort the list; the rounded figures can appear in our server logs like any search. Without that, these pages may use an approximate location (usually your city) worked out from your IP address by our security provider. We don’t link your location to you or use it for anything else, and we remove it from the page address we send to Google Analytics.
- Cookies and similar technologies set by us and by the third-party services below.
How we use information
- To run the site, show hospital information and answer searches.
- To reply to your messages and correct the data when you report a problem.
- To send hospital alerts you asked for, and to stop when you unsubscribe.
- To show ads, which pay for the site, and to measure how the site and our own advertising perform.
- To keep the site secure and to prevent spam, fraud and automated abuse.
- To comply with the law and enforce our Terms & Conditions.
We do not sell your name or email address, and we do not share them with advertisers. We share information only with the service providers listed above, when the law requires it, to protect the site and its users, or as part of a sale or transfer of the site, in which case this policy would continue to apply to information collected under it.
Advertising and your choices
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website and other websites. Google’s advertising cookies let it and its partners serve ads to you based on those visits.
- Turn off personalized Google ads in Google’s My Ad Center.
- Opt out of personalized ads from many other vendors at aboutads.info (U.S.) or youronlinechoices.eu (Europe).
- Stop Google Analytics from measuring your visits with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Manage how Meta uses data from other websites in your Facebook ad preferences.
Opting out does not remove ads. You will still see ads, but they won’t be based on your browsing.
Visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a consent message from Google’s certified consent management platform asks for your choices before advertising cookies are used to personalize ads. You can change your choices at any time with the privacy settings link that appears on the site after you first respond.
We rely on your consent for advertising and analytics cookies, and on our legitimate interest in running and securing the site for standard request data. You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to our use of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. Information may be processed in the United States, where our service providers operate.
U.S. state privacy rights
Depending on where you live (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states with consumer privacy laws), you may have the right to know what personal information we have about you, to get a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of targeted advertising or the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information as those laws define it.
We don’t sell personal information for money. Allowing Google, Meta and other ad partners to collect cookie and device data for personalized advertising may count as “sharing” or “targeted advertising” under some state laws. To opt out, use the choices in Advertising and your choices, block third-party cookies in your browser, or contact us. To exercise any other right, contact us and tell us what you would like us to do. We may need to confirm your email address before acting on a request, and we will not treat you differently for using these rights.
How long we keep information and how we protect it
- Unconfirmed alert sign-ups are deleted automatically after 7 days.
- Confirmed alert subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe, and we keep a record of the unsubscribe so we don’t email you again.
- Form messages are kept as long as needed to handle them and to keep a record of corrections made to the data.
- Server and security logs are kept for a limited period by us and our hosting and security providers.
The site is served only over encrypted HTTPS, and access to our database is restricted. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Children
This site is meant for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the site or the services we use change. The date at the top of the page shows when it last changed. If we make a significant change to how we use your email address, we will tell alert subscribers by email.
Contact us
For privacy questions or requests, use our contact form and say that your message is a privacy request. We aim to respond within 30 days, or sooner when the law requires it.
