About Hospitals In Each State

An independent, ad-supported directory of U.S. hospitals built from public data: CMS (Medicare) quality, cost and ownership data, plus BLS, Census, IRS, HRSA and SAMHSA sources. Not affiliated with CMS, any government agency or any hospital.

What this site is

HospitalsInEachState.com is a directory of U.S. hospitals: 5,952 open U.S. hospitals in our directory today, with a page for each one and rankings by state. Every figure comes from a public source and is shown with that source. We don't review hospitals, rate them ourselves or give medical advice.

The site is paid for by advertising. It is not affiliated with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), any other government agency, or any hospital or health system listed.

Where the data comes from

"Last loaded" is the date this site last imported a new release of that dataset. We check the federal sources on a schedule and load a release when it is published; the CMS hospital data on the site is the release published July 22, 2026.

What each measure means, its CMS measure ID and its limits: About the data.

How we word the numbers

ER times are medians, not live waits. The ER visit time is CMS measure OP-18b: the median time in the emergency department for patients who were treated and sent home, over a year. In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.

Medicare payments are not prices. Procedure figures say what Medicare paid, or what Medicare allowed including the patient's share, for Medicare patients. Private insurance and cash prices differ.

Stars are Medicare's ratings, not reviews. CMS star ratings summarize quality measures. They are not patient reviews.

Counts say what they count. A count names its basis, such as "open hospitals in our directory" or "hospitals that report to Medicare (CMS)". We call a hospital the "shortest" or "highest" only when at least two report the measure.

A missing figure isn't a bad figure. Many small, specialty and VA hospitals don't report every measure. We say so rather than leave a blank.

Corrections

If something looks wrong, use the correction form (hospital pages link to it with the hospital filled in), or contact us. Tell us the hospital and what is wrong. We trace each report back to the source release: a matching or display error on our side gets fixed on the site, and a figure that is wrong in the federal source stays as published until the publisher corrects it.
