As of the August 2026 CMS release, there are 6,616 Medicare-certified hospices in the 50 states and territories on this site. 2,158 have a family caregiver rating, and 60% of those have 4 or 5 stars (average 3.7). California has the most, with 1,913.
Hospices provide comfort care for people with a terminal illness, usually at home, in an assisted living or nursing home, or in an inpatient hospice unit. Medicare's hospice benefit covers it when a doctor certifies a life expectancy of six months or less. CMS publishes a family caregiver survey for each hospice, with a star rating, along with measures of how the hospice cared for patients.
CMS's 1-5 star rating from the CAHPS Hospice Survey, which asks family caregivers about communication, timely help, emotional support, help for pain and symptoms and overall care.

Yes. Medicare Part A covers hospice care in full for patients a doctor certifies as having six months or less to live if the illness runs its normal course. Patients may pay up to $5 per prescription for pain and symptom drugs and 5% of the cost of inpatient respite care. Choosing hospice means stopping treatment meant to cure the terminal illness, but Medicare still covers care for unrelated conditions.
