Dialysis centers treat people whose kidneys have failed, usually with in-center hemodialysis three times a week. Many also train patients to dialyze at home with peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis. Every Medicare-certified center reports to CMS, which publishes a star rating and how each center's patient outcomes compare with what would be expected for its patients.
CMS's 1-5 star rating for dialysis centers, built from patient survival, hospital admissions, readmissions, transfusions, infections and other outcomes, adjusted for how sick each center's patients are.

CMS's 1-5 star rating for dialysis centers, built from patient survival, hospital admissions, readmissions, transfusions, infections and other outcomes, adjusted for how sick each center's patients are. Ratings are relative: CMS sets the cut-offs so that each star level covers a share of dialysis centers nationally.
Look at the star rating and at the outcome verdicts, then at practical things: distance (most patients go three times a week), whether the center has an evening shift if you work, and whether it offers training for home dialysis if you might want it later. Visit, and ask how many patients each nurse looks after.
